The group started off the day with a tasty breakfast made by Chef Dave. Upon finishing breakfast, we had our morning lecture with Lisa. We learned about the more mystical aspects of Irish literature and culture through the poems and writings of writers W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, John Millington and more. After completing the lecture, the group set off for the Connemara pony stables where we had the opportunity to receive a lecture on how to ride the horses and got a tour of the grounds while riding as a group. While most experienced a fun yet calm ride, some students seemed to have a bumpy ride.
After the horseback riding, the group got back on the bus and stopped at the “Clifton Boat Club” for a family style lunch (would recommend the lamb). Not only was the food amazing but it also brought out a competitive eating environment. With Spencer taking the “win” after scarfing down two bowls of salad, the group was then full and ready to head to the Gurteen Beaches for a hurling and football demonstration.
The hurling demonstration and game was interesting to say the least with Ryan’s luck still failing him in what would seem to be crucial moments as he fell into cow manure during the match. However, as soon as the football game began everyone was promptly shown up by the two kids on the field who seemed to be professionals compared to all of the Pre-College students. Despite the physical effort exerted by the group during both matches, the bus ride home was full of T Swift and Ed Sheeran loud enough for the entire country to hear.
Dinner seemed to be a fan favorite among the boys as we sculpted some grand mussel towers on the dinner table. The real competition of the day came with Chef Dave’s cooking challenge making the Chocolate Mousse. While some believed their forearms were falling off, others rose to the occasion to carry their teams to the finish line. Decorating the desserts brought out the artistic (vicious) nature in the contestants (*cough cough* Curtis and Elise) which will make for some interesting taste combinations for tomorrow’s dinner. Finally, Rose/Bud/Thorn revealed that today was considered as the best day of the trip so far by most of the group. Hopefully these last few days can hold up to the standards set by today’s activities.
